omfg I have the worst headcanon and YOU CAN REFUTE THIS BUT
at some point (when he started training her mayyybe? idk. She's not trained proppa yet though) she does something reckless and silly and Gold ends up going to help/save her and gets hurt pretty badly idk and it's the only time Hawksley has ever just... FLIPPED HIS SHIT at her like normally he keeps cool and calm even when he's pissed cause he's just stoic like that but he just gets SUPER ANGRY and screams at her for a while and then goes off and hugs Gold (and doesn't let go because seriously Gold means so much to Hawksley and he is codependent on him it's kinda sad) and just feels TERRIBLE cause he snapped at her so badly and she is young and doesn't know better but IF YOU PUT HIS FUCKING BABY IN DANGER HE WILL BE REALLY PISSED FOREVER

and then Avery who's usually so snarky and composed and like seems not affected by critcism (even though she really takes it all to heart and is really affected by what others thinks of her) cries. which is a big deal because she doesn't cry often at all, and especially not in front of people, NEVER in front of people, but she's never seen Hawksley like this and it catches her offguard. and he's right, she did put Gold in danger and Shadowmar means everything to her, he's basically her other half so she understands how Hawksley feels. so when he starts flipping a shit on her she can't help but feel so awful inside that she starts crying.
but she doesn't bend her pride enough to give him a straight up apology later. it's more like she walks over when he's busy doing something and sits near him, also pretending to be busy, and then she sort of glances at him sideways and mutters that next time when they train she'll stay away from the (whatever put her in danger) and then she doesn't really wait for a response because she can't handle one, so she gets up and walks away.
